In “Beautiful Disasters” photographer David Drebin takes us on an alluringly voyeuristic journey around the world, looking at beautiful women caught in a public moment of distress。 They and their problems seem of an entirely different kind from what the rest of us have to deal with, and we are instinctively drawn to them and Drebin tries to accentuate the mysteriousness of the female models in his photographs by overemphasizing their anonymity。 Most of them don’t look at the camera, and even whe In “Beautiful Disasters” photographer David Drebin takes us on an alluringly voyeuristic journey around the world, looking at beautiful women caught in a public moment of distress。 They and their problems seem of an entirely different kind from what the rest of us have to deal with, and we are instinctively drawn to them and Drebin tries to accentuate the mysteriousness of the female models in his photographs by overemphasizing their anonymity。 Most of them don’t look at the camera, and even when they do, their faces are at least partially obscured。 The women are elusive, mildly and tastefully erotic, and symbolic of some dreamlike world that we are only partially privy to。 Each photograph tells a story, or at least hints at one。 For all their glorious detail, these photographs conceal more than they reveal。 This is also a great book of travel photography。 Drebin choses his locations from some of the most iconic and recognizable world locations。 His cityscapes are some of the most visually rich that I’ve come across。 The photograph of the New York’s Central Park is probably the best such photograph that I’ve seen。 It truly does justice to this magnificent park and the city that surrounds it。 The photographs have a very cinematic feel to them, even reminiscent of the golden age of cinema。 They remind us of the glamorous world that film once evoked, and they manage, as much as the format allows, to transport us back to that era。 The photographs are really large, and most of them cover the full two-page spread。 One is even a foldout kind that takes up all of the four large format pages。 They are crisp and elegant, and the whole book is very well made and designed。 It would look good in any elegant living room or bookshelf。 It would also make an excellent beautiful gift。 。。。more
